Abstract
The author studied how they enjoyed the taste of plants and animals in the Shinden-zukuri garden of the Heian period by means of analyzing the description in the dynastic literature. Through the study it is observed that they enjoyed the features and warbling of birds, the songs of insects, and the glow of fireflies as cleatures in the garden. They also enjoyed the seosonal beauty of plants reflected by weather, and branches pruned from trees and shrubs in the garden. Furthemore he author pointed out these facts should be located as the starting point of the garden admiration in Japan.
