Abstract
HASHIMOTO Kansetsu is one of the most important Japanese-style painters in Taisho and early Showa period. He made gorgeous gardens at his residence and villas; Hakusason-soh (Kyoto City), Kaiko-Rohaku-soh (Akashi City), Soseikyo (Otsu City) and Toka-an (Takarazuka City). He told in his essays as the following ;“Making gardens and building houses are also creative work.” or “Making gardens is as same as painting pictures.” He was so enthusiastic about making houses and gardens that it seems one of the purposes of his life. In his garden design, we can partly find some characteristics based on his learning on Japanese and Chinese history and admire to a man of culture in China. But at the same time, his gardens are composed of actualscale elements and present picturesque landscapes. From that point of view, they are also included in the category of modern landscape gardens.
