Abstract
In this paper, collaboration between the Japanese scientific community and the EISCAT Scientific Association on the new Svalbard radar project is briefly discussed. Some of the important research topics we intend to pursue in conjunction with the Svalbard radar are summarized. They are: identification of the polar cusp region, solar wind control of the polar cusp, electrodynamics in the polar cusp and polar cap regions, contracted-oval substorms, and thermospheric dynamics at high latitudes.
