Abstract
Contaminated soil has become a serious societal problem as a result of the affluent lifestyle enjoyed in Japan since the era of high economic growth. Soil contamination is often caused by oil in particular, and countermeasures to such contamination are urgently needed. The problem is that a massive amount of oil, for making fuels and solvents, has been consumed and disposed of, owing to its advantages such as low price, easy handling, and high energy density. We have newly developed a system to detoxify oil-contaminated soil by heat treatment: the oil is desorbed from the soil and decomposed by oxidative degradation. In this report, we outline the developed system for remediating oil-contaminated soil and examine its remediation performance.
