Examination of type and secondary collections of Breutelia from Brazil leads the author to recognize 5 species for the country: B. grandis (Hampe) Par., B. microdonta (Mitt.) Broth., B. subdisticha (Hampe) Jaeg., B. subtomentosa (Hampe) Jaeg. and B. wainioi Broth. Three species are placed in synonymy, viz. B. declivium (C. Muell.) Par. (= B. wainioi), B. rivalis (C. Muell.) Par. (= B. subdisticha) and B. ulei (C. Muell.) Par. (= B. subtomentosa). Sporophytes are described for the first time in B. grandis and B. subdisticha. In the New World Breutelia is found from the Greater Antilles and Northern Mexico to Patagonia and Fuegia; however, the distribution of floristic elements within the genus accords only partially with the scheme (Am 2-6) of Index Muscorum.
