The accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant following the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 prompted the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) to review the framework of radiation protection for humans and the environment in the event of a large-scale nuclear accident. The ICRP established a task group in 2013 to carry out activities, which resulted in the report. The ICRP has published a report as ICRP Publication 146. This publication updates Publications 109 and 111 and supersedes the recommendations published previously in Publications 40, 63 and 82. ICRP recognises that a large nuclear accident affects all dimensions of individual and social life which include societal, environmental and economic consequences as well as radiation-induced health effects. These factors are highlighted in Publication 146 as characteristics of the effects of a major nuclear accident that need to be considered and addressed. This review explains the main points supplemented as far as possible by the information contained in Publication 146.
