Low voltage accelerators with tritium target are widely used for obtaining versatile intensitive neutron sources in the both fields of industrial and scientific researches. However, recent reports on the contamination due to the tritium target have called an attention to careful handling of the target. In our experiences, a number of corroded spots was observed on the deposited tritium layer of the target after a few months. When it was bombarded with deutron beam, many fine cracks appeared on the target. Then the titanium layer was peeled off, which scattered active titanium fragments. Thus, our generator and its surroundings were contaminated. On this paper, microphotographic and autoradiographic observations of the tritium targets and the peeled off fragments were carried out.
Use of paper towel seemed most effective for the decontamination. It is not recommended to wash with water or soapless-soap.
The tritium target should be handled carefully as an unsealed radioisotope.
