Clinical evaluation of intensity modulated radiotherapy using Helical TomoTherapy for patients with local recurrence of nasopharyngeal cancer

Abstract

Between 2006 and 2009, 13 patients with locally recurrent nasopharyngeal cancer received re-irradiation using Helical Tomotherapy (HT). Majority of our cohort are treated with concurrent chemotherapy with IMRT. The median re-irradiation dose was 44 Gy. One-year progression-free survival rate was 41.7%, and 1-year overall survival rate was 88%, with median follow-up of 6.8 months. Late toxicities equal or greater than grade 3 were seen only one patient. IMRT using HT is quite useful for treatment of re-irradiation for locally recurrent nasopharyngeal cancer.
