Abstract
Sinonasal papilloma is a histologically benign tumor. However, it frequently exhibits local recurrence and is also often associated with malignancy. We retrospectively reviewed fifty-seven cases of sinonasal papilloma treated at Kyushu University Hospital. Thirty-eight of the patients were male and nineteen were female. According to the classification by Krouse, 12 cases were classified as T1, 17 as T2, 22 as T3 and 6 as T4. The pathological diagnosis of most cases was inverted papilloma. In ten cases, squamous cell carcinoma was accompanied by papilloma. The clinical symptoms, such as nasal bleeding and pain, seem to characterize the existence of malignancy. Although the survival outcome of SCC arising from IP appears to be comparable with sinonasal SCCs, some of the T4 patients (according to the Krouse classification) were found to have a highly aggressive disease. Therefore, T4 patients are recommended to be treated as if they have a malignant tumor.
