Abstract

Tracheostomy is roughly classified into two types of procedures: respiratory tracheotomy and emergency tracheotomy. We clinically examined all tracheotomies that were performed in our department from 2012 to 2016. Among 36 patients who underwent idiotic tracheostomy, malignant tumors were found in 61% (22/36 cases), 17 of which were reconstructive surgical cases. The cannula placement period in the reconstructive surgery cases was within 6 days in 47% (8/17 cases), and removal could normally be considered on the 5th postoperative day. Malignant tumors were found in 63% of cases of emergency tracheotomy (5/8 cases). Of note, tracheotomy was performed in a semi-sitting position due to difficulty in stretching the neck, for cases in which tension pneumothorax was combined after the insertion of a tracheal cannula, and for cases in which tracheotomy was performed at a surgical site after performing a cricoid mesotomy.
