Differences in the approaches for treating dysphagia in cases of stroke and respiratory diseases were compared in 154 patients who underwent swallowing rehabilitation at Fukuoka University Chikushi Hospital. In stroke cases, rehabilitation was performed significantly earlier, and in pneumonia cases, perceptual decline, intraoral contamination, and pharyngeal remnants tended to be found. There was no significant difference between the two groups in the feeding condition at discharge. Factors that did not result in oral ingestion were most frequently consciousness disorders in the stroke group and deterioration of the general condition due to prolonged pneumonia in the respiratory disease group. Given our findings suggesting a difference in the consciousness of the patients and the policies of medical departments regarding dysphagia, it therefore appears to be necessary to establish a unified system in the future.
