Abstract
An autopsy case of squamous cell carcinoma of the middle ear who died of radiation effect after thirteen years of the surgery and radium treatment was reported.
A male aged 44 was operated upon under diagnosis of cholesteatoma-otitis. The papillomatous tissue taken from the middle ear at the operation revealed the squamous cell carcinoma microscopically.
The patient was treated with radium and sarcomycin and seemed to have recovered after seven years to the degree that he was able to be on duty ordinally. Duplicate radiation with cobalt and radium resulted in an apparent cure of the original cancer, but necrosis of bone, brain and dura due to radiation effect. Superimposing of infection caused complication of suppurative meningitis, and he died.
