Abstract
The cystic lesions of the maxillary sinus are not so rare in E. N. T. clinic. These include, odontogenic cyst, retention cyst, mucocele, pyocele and postoperative cyst. In contrast to rather common odontogenic and retention cyst, mucocele and pyocele are extremely rare. Each one case of the radicular and retention cysts and two cases of the pyocele in the maxillary sinus are here reported. None had a history of sinus operation.
The first case with a painless swelling of right cheek and the second case complaining of attacks of right facial pain were investigated radiologically. Preoperative diagnosis were radicular cyst and retention cyst, respectively. The diagnosis turned out to be correct by surgery and histopathological examination.
The third case with a fluctuant swelling had a history of trauma in right cheek. The puncture revealed the presence of the purulent content. The fourth case had a painful swelling of left cheek. Three previous incisions were done to drain the pus from the cyst. In both cases, X-ray examination showed an expansive lesion of the antrum with bony involvement. Preoperative diagnosis for them was pyocele of the maxillary sinus. The surgery and histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis.
