Abstract
No clear description has been found regarding what influence the lateral wall of the nose has on the development of the deviation of the nasal septum. Clinically, swelling or expansion of the middle turbinal on the concave side is seen with the so-called upper deviation, but theories on the relation between the deviation and the lateral wall of the nose are many and varied. The authors tried to clarify the relation by the X-ray examination, but the ordinary X-ray failed to give any solution. Since the tomography was adopted, however, many cases have been encountered in which the expansion of the middle turbinal must be considered to be the cause of the deviation. As the expansion of the middle turbinal is due to an unbalance of the development of the ethmoid air cells, the unbalance seems to influence more or less the development of the deviation.
