Abstract
Seventy-three cases of carcinoma of the mesopharynx treated from 1973 to 1985 at Gunma Cancer Center were evaluated. Twenty seven cases were treated with external irradiation combined with intraarterial chemotherapy and 21 cases were treated with external irradiation alone. These two treatments were compared and the following results were obtained.
1. According to TNM classification (UICC, 1983), there were no difference between the two groups of chemotherapy combined group and radiation alone group. Intraarterial chemotherapy was used for the lesion which developed to two or more regions of the mesopharynx.
2. The treatment of external irradiation combined with intraarterial chemotherapy for the mesopharyngeal carcinoma was evaluated as a intermediate treatment between radiation alone and surgery.
3. The five year cumulative survival rate in external irradiation alone was 45%. In groups with external irradiation combined with itraarterial chemotherapy, 5 year survival rate was 37.7%.
