Abstract
A multicenter open study was carried out to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of orally administered ciprofloxacin (100mg-200mg t. i. d.) in the treatment of suppurative otitis media and sinusitis. The following results were obtained.
1) Clinical efficacy was evaluated by the physicians in charge in 39 cases (sex: male 12, female 27; mean age: 46.4 years old; mean duration of administration: 9.0 days; diagnosis: suppurative otitis media 17, sinusitis 22). The rates of effectiveness were 82% (32/39) for all cases, 77% (13/17) for suppurative otitis media and 86% (19/22) for sinusitis.
2) As causative organisms, 21 strains were isolated from 20 cases before treatment. The bacteriologic eradication rate was 82% (14/17).
3) No side effects were reported.
4) Tissue (maxillary sinus mucous membrane, etc.) and serum concentrations of ciprofloxacin were evaluated. In maxillary sinus mucous membrane, the mean concentrations were 0.40μg/g and in serum the mean concentrations were 0.29μg/ml at 120 minutes after 200mg oral administration.
From these results, oral ciprofloxacin is considered to be very useful for the treatment of suppurative otitis media and sinusitis.
