Abstract

To select those who have staggers caused by labyrinth, it has been measured usually, durable time of the “Post-rotationary” nystagmus. But when we observe the said nystagmus with naked eyes, our subjective view very much interferes with our final conclusion, and it has been said, that various conditions affect the durable time of the nystagmus in animal experiments.
Consequently I have observed the following effect in man. (1) The differences based on the subjective view of the examiner. (2) The visual angle of the examined. (3) Meal. (4) The length of the recess between two measurements. (5) Daily changes. (6) Age. (7) The rightward rotation and the leftward rotation.
And so I wanted to select those who have staggering tendency upon the result of my above experiment. But I have found the nystagmus to be unsuitable as a standard for discovering those who have such tendency.
Therefore, I observed directly the duration of selfconscious staggers occasioned by giving rotationary stimulus, the vestibular vegetable nervous reflex caused by putting the head in motion while rotation, and the vestibular-spinal reflex caused by sudden change of the head position at the end of rotation I have been convinced of the suitability of the last method for the purpose.
