Tracheo-innominate artery fistula is known to be a serious and potentially fatal complication after tracheostomy.
We successfully treated a case of hemorrhage caused by a tracheo-innominate artery fistula.
The patient was a 19-year-old woman in whom tracheostomy had been performed at 17 years of age because of upper-airway obstruction. Massive bleeding occurred from the tracheostoma, which was controlled by inflating the tube-cuff. Enhanced CT indicated the presence of a tracheo-innominate artery fistula. An emergency operation was performed in which the innominate artery was ligated at the proximal and distal ends and the fistula was closed.
Tracheo-innominate artery fistula is a rare, but life-threatening complication after tracheostomy. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are essential for providing a chance for survival. After temporary control of the bleeding, ligation of the innominate artery is necessary.
