On the basis of 780 responses to a questionnaire, socio-economic aspects of laryngectomized persons were investigated chiefly in relation to age at the time of surgery. The results were summarized as follows: (1) The younger the age, the more frequently was the voice used pre-operatively. (2) The older the age, the less frequently they used their voice after laryngectomy. (3) The rate of success in learning to speak was greater when surgery was done on younger persons. (4) Post-operative inconvenience and/or problems were greatest for persons who had had a laryngectomy in their thirties or younger. Among the persons who had had surgery in their forties or older, the problems were greater in those of an advanced age at the time of surgery. (5) A decrease in income was the most frequently seen among persons who had undergone laryngectomy in their fifties or sixties. (6) A change in occupation was frequently required for persons in their thirties, and the separation rate was greatest for persons in their sixties.
