The effect of serratiopeptidase (TSP), a representative proteolytic enzyme, on the nasal secretions from the patients with chronic sinusitis was studied. The patients were selected on the basis of rhinoscopy and radiology. Retained nasal secretion in the nasal cavity was carefully aspirated and diluted 8-fold with distilled water. Relative viscosity was measured by a method of the rate of the falling metal ball. Dry weight, amounts of protein and polysaccharide were determined before and every week during drug administration. TSP was given in a dose of 30mg/day orally for moret han four weeks.
In preadministration measurement, the mean relative viscosity, dry weight, amounts of protein and polysaccharide were 3.100±2.1810, 55.5mg/g±18.2, 29.9mg/g±18.8 and 3.3mg/g±1.9, respectively, and these were 2.6167±1.7836, 46.7mg/g±16.9, 24.3mg/g±19.4 and 2.7mg/g±1.5 at 4th week, respectively. The difference for the mean dry weight was significant (p<0.05). Although the mean relative viscosity, amounts of protein and polysaccharide tended to decrease by administration of TSP, the difference between preadministration and the 4th week was not significant.
