Abstract
A study was conducted on the effect of lysozyme (Leftose syrup) (25-120mg/kg, per os) on bleeding during minor surgery (i. e. tonsillectomy). Lysozyme was administered to 22 patients, starting five days prior to operation, and it was continued for 10 days. i) According to the surgeon's subjective judgment, inhibition of bleeding during surgery was marked in two, moderate in 13 and slight in seven patients, it was, therefore, effective in 68.2% of the patients treated, ii) Examinations before and after lysozyme administration showed no significant difference in bleeding time, clotting time, serum fibrinolysin level or prothrombin time. However, the platelet count tended to increase (p<0.10). iii) No obvious side effects attributable to this drug were observed. These results show that lysozyme administration can be recommended before and after tonsillectomy.
