Abstract
1) We treated 20 children aged 4 to 9 years, for chronic nasosinusitis, with a Kampo drug, Kakkontokasenkyushin-i extract. During the prolonged treatment averaging 275 days, the patients took 2.5g of the drug per day orally.
2) During the treatment, radiographic patterns and other objective and subjective findings demonstrated improvement in 90% of the patients, marked in 60% and moderate in 30%.
3) The rate of improvement tends to rise as the period of administration is prolonged.
4) Side effects:
Pseudo-aldosteronism and some other abnormalities were reported. These were due to abnormal electrolyte metabolism caused by glycyrrhiza. No significant side effects of the drug were noted in our 20 patients.
