A three-year retrospective study was performed in 359 infants with acute otitis media.
1) The incidence of bilateral acute otitis media was higher in winter than in summer, while unilateral cases were seen uniformly throughout the year.
2) The number of cases of acute otitis media increased with age.
3) The bacteria in the middle ear were most often hemophilus influenzae, followed by pneumococcus, and staphylococcus aureus.
4) Of the unilateral cases 75% healed within one month, but only half of the bilateral cases healed as quickly.
5) The interval between healing and recurrence was 4.1±3.5 (mean SD) months for unilateral and 2.5±2.8 months for bilateral cases.
