The distribution of Latamoxef sodium (LMOX) to the temporal bone tissue after intravenous administration was studied in patients who underwent middle ear surgery.
1) The mean concentration of LMOX in the temporal bone 60-120min after an injection of 2g was 15.8μg/g, and the mean concentration in the tissue was 27.7% that in the blood.
2) P. aeruginosa and S. aureus were the most frequent bacteria recovered from the aural discharge before operation.
3) The concentration of LMOX distributed to the temporal bone tissue seemed to be greater than the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of LMOX against all the bacteria identified in each case.
4) LMOX administered postoperatively was judged to be clinically effective in 23 cases out of 25 (92%).
It is concluded that LMOX is an effective antibiotics which can be used after middle ear surgery.
