The therapeutic effect of bifemelane hydrochloride was studied in 38 patients over 50 years of age with tinnitus. The patients were given a 50mg tablet of bifemelane hydrochloride three times daily for 2 to 8 weeks.
Evaluation of the final global improvement showed it to be very effective in 2 patients (5.3%), moderately effective in 9 (23.7%) and slightly effective in 5 (39.5%), giving a total efficacy rate of 68.4%. The improvement in patients with hypertension and tinnitus was especially good, with a total efficacy rate of 75.0%.
No side effects were noted.
Bifemelane hydrochloride is considered to be useful for aged patients with tinnitus.
The origin of tinnitus in aged patients seems to be only in the peripheral auditory pathway but also in the neurons in the central auditory pathway, and this drug presumably activates the function of neurons in the central auditory pathway.
