Malignant neoplasms of the sphenoid sinus are very rare. We report here 3 cases of this rare tumor and review the literature.
Case 1 was a 46-year-old man with diplopia and lumbago. Case 2 was a 41-year-old man with diplopia and right visual disturbance, and Case 3 was a 51-year-old woman with right visual disturbance. The pathohistological diagnoses were squamous cell carcinoma in Cases 1 and 3 and adenocarcinoma in Case 2. Radiotherapy or chemotherapy was administered, but all three patients died within 10 months after the onset of symptoms.
Including our 3 patients, 22 cases of primary malignant neoplasms in the sphenoid sinus have been reported in Japan. The most common early symptoms were not nasal but visual problems. The prognosis of this tumor is very poor.
