Abstract

A statistical review was made of the 726 patients with otolaryngological diseases observed at the Department of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine of St. Marianna University Hospital between July 1,1981 and January 31,1985.
The Patients'ages showed a wide range, but about 40% were children under ten years with nasal bleeding and acute otitis media.
Most patients we brought to the depar t m ent on the day after before holidays and at night.
One hundred fifty-four patients (36.7%) were brought to the department by ambulance most patients had common illness that did not require emergency admission and their symptoms were mild.
One hundred six pati e nts (14.6%) required emergency admission, because of extensive nasal bleeding, obstruction by a foreign body, vertigo and malignant neoplasma.
The present findings may be useful in improving the quality of critical care medicine.
