We performed reconstructive surgery for head and neck cancers, either primary or recurrent, on 29 patients (53 cases) admitted to the our department between April 1,1990and March 31,1993.
We mainly report the reconstructive region, reconstructive material and postoperative course.
Patients tended to be men in their sixties with parotid gland cancer. The most common reconstructive region was the neck.
As reconstructive material, we employed free flaps, mostly from the thigh flaps. Postoperative complications occurred in 24 of the 53 cases. The prognosis for survival as of March 31,1993 was positive in 14 of 29 patients.
Discussion includes a consideration of the literature.
