Abstract

Pyogenic granuloma is a benign tumor of the dermis and mucosa. In the head and neck region, pyogenic glanulomas are most frequently located in the oral and/or nasal mucosa. A 70-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of laryngeal discomfort and hoarseness. Laryngoscopy revealed a mass with a smooth and hemorrhagic surface in the oropharynx. Shortly after her admission, the mass was removed because it showed rapid growth, resulting in severe dyspnea. CT scan and angiographic findings suggested that the growth was a hemangioma or malignant tumor. The mass was resected by laryngomicrosurgery and histological study revealed it to be a pyogenic granuloma. The patient has been followed for three years without recurrence.
