Abstract

Between 1993 and 1997,105 cases of foreign bodies in otolaryngological regions were treated in our department. The location of the foreign bodies included the ear (35.2%), nose (8.6%), oral cavity and pharynx (40.0%), esophagus (13.3%) and trachea and bronchus (2.9%). The most frequently found foreign body in the ear was hair. All cases involving the nose were in children under 5 years of age.
In the oral cavity and pharynx, foreign bodies were mainly found in the tonsils, and fish bones (97.6%) were the most common foreign bodies.
Coins were the most common foreign body in the esophagus, and were found at the cricopharyngeus. Most cases involving the trachea and bronchus were in children.
