Copper electrodeposition can join aluminum (and its alloy) sheets with high bonding strength when the aluminum sheets are anodized for the formation porous aluminum oxide at the surface. In this study, A1050–H24 aluminum sheets were anodized and subsequently joined at the edges by copper electrodeposition. The tensile tests on the joint exhibited the joining strength of 105 MPa which reaches the maximum strength of A1050–H24. Microstructural observations revealed the formation of composites of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) and electrodeposited copper at the joining interface, suggesting that the composite possess high mechanical strength owing to the nanoanchor effect. The mechanical response of anodized and copper–electrodeposited A6061–T6 aluminum alloy was also examined by dynamic indentation tests, suggesting high mechanical resistance of the AAO/electrodeposited copper nanocomposite layer against the plastic deformation.
