Abstract
Defibrillation of alkaline treated bamboo pulp was investigated to produce safe and economically-competitive cellulose nano-fiber from bamboo resources. Enzymatic pretreatment assisted defibrillation process using normal bead mill. For future edible road development, cellulase enzyme preparations for food addition were selected to produce microfibrillated cellulose. The cellulase preparation from Aspergillus was most suitable to loosen fibers. Size of beads, flow rate of the bead mill to pass the reaction vessel, and reaction time affected the properties of the resultant slurry. Median lethal dose (LD_<50>) of the orally given defibrillated pulp from bamboo estimated by acute oral toxicity was higher than 2000 mg/kg in mice.
