A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the waterrequirement of subsurface and surface irrigation for a new rice-growing systemcalled large-sized paddy field using Direct seeding supported by Subsurfaceirrigation (LDS). Subsurface and surface irrigation was automated using asolar-powered electric regulation system. The automated system was evaluatedin terms of its performance and labor-saving effectiveness.
The results indicate that the water consumption of rice during the germinationstage was 14 mm/day and during the other stages it was 15 to 25 mm/day. Using an automatic regulation system it is possible to precisely maintainthe water table at any depth above or below the ground level. A labor saving of59 hrs/ha (66%) over the existing surface irrigation system can be achieved byan automatic controlled irrigation system.
