Soil erosion is a major threat to food production and the environment. Soil loss from agricultural land deteriorates land productivity, and soil particles washed out from fields pollute rivers, lakes, and seashores. Improving methods of preventing erosion is the most important issue, since returning eroded soil particles to their original place is almost impossible.
The mechanism of soil erosion is so complicated that predicting soil loss accurately is difficult. A number of tools for predicting soil loss have been developed, but their performance is not satisfactory. Understanding the physical, chemical, and mechanical factors behind erosion may be the fastest way to better soil loss prediction. The present studies were part of a project to assess soil erosion mechanisms.
