Formation of N_2 from Ca-loaded low rank coals during pyrolysis at 10K/min to 1350℃ has been studied with a fixed bed quartz reactor, and factors controlling N_2 have been examined. When the Ca is added to the raw coals, it decreases N_2 yield below 750℃ but increases it at 800-1100℃. In the case of the demineralized coals, the Ca added drastically increases N_2 yield at 900-1100℃, and provides 6-fold rate of N_2 formation at around 1000℃. It is suggested that the highly dispersed Ca catalyzes N_2 formation through solid-phase reactions in the high temperature range.
