The reactivity of coal on hydrogasification depends significantly on the coal rank as well as other gaseous reactions. The reaction characteristics of two selected coals were examined at a high pressure of hydrogen using a rapid heat reactor. The demineralization and heat treatment of coal prior to hydrogasification reduce their reactivities. For the effects of heat treatment, however, there is a great difference between chars prepared from slow and rapid heating. Chars from rapid heating have much higher reactivities than those from slow heating, although they have been devolatalized to a higher extent than latter.
