Pyridine soluble portions of Upper Freeport (UF) and Illinois No. 6 (IL) coals were mixed with N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP). Annealings of the mixtures at 353K could produce stable gelly materials. Viscoelastic properties of gel were characterized by means of controlled stress oscillatory rheometory at temperatures between 223 and 273K. The measured modulus of rigidity was resolved into storage and loss components, as a function of temperature and oscillation frequency. Time-temperature superposition procedures were apparently allowed to construct the master curves reduced to 243K. It was found that the moduli of the gel formed from IL are larger than that from UF at equivalent temperatures and frequencies. IR spectra of the gels indicate that the hydrogen bonding interaction between the extracts and NMP plays a key role on the stabilities of the gels.
