Steam gasification of a low rank coal and catalytic cracking of 1700 ppm C_6H_6 as a tar model compound have been studied with natural limonite, α-FeOOH and Fe_2O_3 nanoparticles. These materials, which are mixed simply with the coal in water, increase the char reactivity at 800℃ though the enhancement is small, and no further activation of the limonite is observed by co-existing a small amount of ion-exchanged Ca. On the other hand, Fe-bearing chars prepared from the limonite-added coal show the high cracking activity in H_2O/H_2. C_6H_6 conversion increases with increasing Fe loading up to 4.2 wt % and reaction temperature in the range of 700-800℃, and it reaches at the largest 55%, which is 3 times that without the Fe. These results strongly suggest that the inexpensive, limonite-based catalyst is promising in the removal of tar compounds from syngas-rich fuel gas produced in coal gasification.
