Utilization of low-rank coals, such as lignite and subbituminous coal, in pulverized coal thermal power plants is important for fuel cost reduction and energy security. However, most of these coals have high propensity for self-heating and run the risk of ignition during pulverization in the roller mill. In this study, the self-heating rate of pulverized coal deposits was measured by the wire basket method, and the concentrations of CO and CO2 were measured simultaneously by gas chromatography. The results showed that the initial self-heating rate of coals were correlated with the concentrations of CO and CO2. Thus, gas measurement is considered suitable for evaluating the self-heating characteristics in a roller mill.
