Abstract

Mr. Kinsaku Nakane published a thesis titled “The Ruins of the Pond-Garden that once existed in the Ryoanji Temple and the Age when its Rock-Garden was built” on the Journal of the Japanese Institute of Lanpscape Architects (March, 1958, Vol.21, No.4), and wherein he presumed, based on an on-the-spot survey of the ruins and study of the literatures concerned, that the Rock-Garden was built during the Kan-ei Era (1624-1644) and named Kotaro and Seijiro as the builders thereof.
However, in the said thesis, many defects have been found in the dealing of the historical materia is and remarkable leap in the logic as well has been noticed on the determination of the age ih which the Rock-Garden was built and the names of the builders thereof.
Therefore, desiring that the future study by Mr. Nakane on the subject matter may be continued on the basis of justifiable historical materials as well as reasonable logic, we have hereinbefore pointe out the faults in the method of study noticed in his thesis.
