Abstract

Japanese lawn-grasses have not yet been accurately classified. I have studied their morphological and phisiological characters from a classificatory point of view and found that the measured value of the width of the leaf is the best standard of classification. On this basis I dvided them into four groups as follows:
(1) Large-leaved lawn grasses (Wild lawn grasses, No-shiba group) Leaf width over 4.0mm.
(2) Medium-leaved lawn grasses (Park lawn grasses, Chu-shiba group) Leaf width 2.5-4.0mm.
(3) Small-leaved lawn grasses (Garden lawn grasses). Chosen-shiba group (Korai-shiba group) Leap width 1.5-2.5mm.
(4) Slender-leaved lawn grasses (Potted lawn grasses, Hime-shiba group) Leaf width under 1.0mm.
