Abstract

In the previous paper, the authors reported the germination of the seeds of American and European Iawn grasses (Kentucky blugrass, colonial bentgrasses Highland bent and Astoria bent, redtop, Bermudagrass, Chewings fescue and Italian ryegrass) in Japan and the repression effects on their growth. The present experiments were carried out to know the irrigation effects and the sunbeam effects on their growth, and the following results obtained.
(1) By the irrigation, the growth of American and European lawn grasses were quickened and the height of them increased.Irrigation of 10 litres per 3.3m2 once or twice a day were effective.
(2) By the results of sunbeam deficiency, their weight (fresh and dry meaure), the amount of stems and stolons, the length and amount of roots decreased, and the height of them increased. Redtop was least influenced by sunbeam deficiency, while Bermudagrass was most influenced.
