What role should school institutions and their open spaces play within the dairy lives of the inhabitants of a neighborhood unit? In this study, questionnaires were given to school principals, vice school principals, and also to the committees installed to extend the usage of the school facilities (i. e. Kaihou Un-ei Iin). The questionnaires were sent to 972 elementary, junior high, and high schools in Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe. Valuable basic data for community facilities improvement planning were obtained, for example concerning consciousness of idea “Educational Park”, the actual state and problems on common public use of school facilities, etc. The response, that was about 70 percent of the total, showed an important result in that about 90 percent of the respondents have a positive opinion on necessity of communal use of school facilities.
