Abstract
The gardens in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) is very important in the history of Chinese gardens. This paper involves the study of the plants species and the planting design of gardens in the Tang Dynasty. The major results of the findings are:
1) The plant species used in gardens in the Tang Dynasty were clarified. The plant species include conifer, broadleaf, trees with ornamental flowers, bamboos, palm trees, flowering herbaceous, fruit trees and medicinal plants.
2) The planting design of gardens in the Tang Dynasty was elucidated.
3) The traditional planting design of Chinese garden was established in the Tang Dynasty, Those examples were as follows: the planting design of Pine, Bamboo and Mume, the planting design of Peach and Willow, the planting design of Lily magnolia, Micromalus, Winter jasmine and Tree paeony, and the planting design of Mume, Orchid, Bamboo and Chrysanthemum.
