Abstract

Analysis of gases extracted from die castings were carried out. The effects of lubricant and casting temperature on gas volume in aluminum alloy die castings were examined. The effects of additional elements such as Si, Zn and Mg in pure aluminum were also tested. The extracted gas is mainly composed of hydrogen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Carbon monoxide is less than 1% in volume. The gas volume in die castings decreases with elevated casting temperature. It considerably decreases by coating the water lubricant containing bone ash powder. It increases with increasing Si content, but decreases with increasing Zn conent.
