Abstract
This paper discusses the design of production planning rule for a type of single-item production-inventory system which depends upon the forecasts. Restrictions of production and inventory capacities which are important factors for determining the amount of production are taken into account in a form of variance. A mathematical model for the system is constructed and analyzed by utilizing differential calculus. The derived planning rule makes it possible to balance the variance of production level with the variance of inventory level.
