Abstract
A set of psychological experiments were carried out to investigate the membership functions of the eight kinds of linguistic labels assigned to pure tone stimuli. The stimuli, ranging from 100 Hz to 9051 Hz, were pre-recorded and presented by a PCM Recorder-Amplifier-Loudspeaker System. A pre-printed response sheet was given to each subject for judging the level of linguistic labels. The membership functions obtained are fitted to those predicted by the fuzzy models. As a result, it was revealed that a linguistic meaning of "or" can be interpreted as a fuzzy logical exclusive, "OR" operation with respect to a uni-dimensional scale.
