We investigated the steam turbine propulsion plant of 80, 000PS output for 1 million dwt tanker under the design conditions that the specific fuel consumption as target was not greater than 170 g/PS⋅h and the plant was realizable in the near future applying marine technology not deviating too far from the present state of art.
As the result, it was concluded that the SFC of 169 g/PS⋅h is attainable by the reheat cycle plant of the steam condition of 140 atg×540 t/540°C, 5-stage feed water heating, and proper driving system for principal auxiliary machineries, and that the extra acquisition cost of the planet due to higher grade is redeemable in 3-5 years by the saving of fuel consumption.
Following studies were also made,
(1) Consideration concerning the problems about main turbine and boiler caused by larger output and elevated steam temperature and pressure, and experimental studies concerning some of the problems were carried out.
(2) Consideration concerning the problems on arrangement in engine room.
(3) Studies on automation system including the early stage diagonosis of unusual running state of machineries in engine room.
