This paper presents a performance evaluation of a diesel engine equipped with the hydraulically actuated and electronically controlled fuel injection and inlet/exhaust valve mechanism. The evaluation is based on an experiment of a test engine and by computer simulation. Engines which use this system can be operated optimally because valve timing and injection pressure can be adjusted independent of engine load and speed As a result, the following can be expected:
(1) Lower specific fuel consumption throughout the whole load range
(2) Lower thermal load
(3) Stable operation in the very low speed range
(4) Improvement in combustion in the use of low grade fuel
This paper describes the fruit of the Technological Research Association of Highly Reliable Marine Propulsion Plant.
