Abstract
The phenomena of ship noise is so complex that it doesn't known clealy as yet how to control it. One of the main goals to research the ship noise is to predict the noise levels in the accommodation space at the design stage. The techniques necessary for solving this problem are divided roughly into two parts, one is to estimate the power generated by noise source and the other is to simulate the transmission path of the noise energy.
SEA (Statistical Energy Analysis) is the most effective method for the latter and our Society has the computer program to execute such simulation using SEA method. But regarding the former, there is no theoretical method to estimate the noise power and we only have a few unreliable data obtained from experiments. The method to measure the sound intensity is lately put into practical use and it makes possible to estimate the noise power more accurately than before. We try to apply this method to measure the noise power generated by diesel generator unit. In this paper we discuss the method and the results of the measurement.
